Start here

If you are new: create a workout, type something like this, and tap Start Workout. Everything else in the app follows from the file.

Quick Core.md
# Quick Core ## Plank- 60s @rest: 30s- 45s @rest: 30s- 45s ## Sit-Ups- x 20- x 20

That is a complete, valid workout with no extensions at all. The format reference covers the rest.

Common questions

Where are my workouts stored?

In the app’s iCloud Documents container, as plain .md files. They appear in the Files app under Simply Train, sync between your devices, and can be edited with any text editor. You can also work with them on a Mac.

I edited a file outside the app and now it won't start.

Open it in the app and look at the diagnostics bar under the editor. Every problem is reported on the line that caused it, in plain language, and most offer a one-tap fix. A file never fails to open — only to start, and only when there is something in it the app genuinely cannot run.

Why did my set line get flagged?

Because it looks like a set but isn’t one the parser can read. The most common case is a weight with no reps — - 225 lbs needs an x 5 or a for 30s. See the format reference for every valid form.

How do I rest as long as I want between heavy sets?

Put @rest: open on the exercise. The rest clock counts up instead of down and waits until you tap Start next set. You can set it on a single set line, on one exercise, or on the whole workout.

Does it track my workouts or write to Health?

No. When a session ends you get a summary, and when you dismiss it the session is discarded. There is no history, no chart and no HealthKit integration — by design — and the Watch app does not change that: it mirrors the session, it does not measure it.

Do supersets run interleaved?

Not yet. Superset blocks are parsed and kept, but this version runs their exercises in order and tells you so with a warning when the session starts. Interleaved execution is the next planned change.

The timer drifted while my phone was locked.

It shouldn’t — every timer is computed from wall-clock timestamps rather than accumulated ticks, and the app recalculates the correct state when it comes back to the foreground. If you have seen otherwise, please write in with your iOS version and what you were doing.

What does the Apple Watch app do?

It starts, mirrors and steers the session running on your phone — the same target, the same countdown, the same controls, with the haptics delivered wrist-down. It is a remote control, not a tracker: it measures nothing, records nothing, and writes no Health data. You cannot edit workouts on it, by design.

Is there an Android version?

No, and none is planned. Simply Train is iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac. Your workouts are plain markdown files, though, so nothing you write is trapped here.

Reporting a bug

Because the app keeps no history and sends no telemetry, there is no crash log on our side to look at — a description from you is genuinely all there is. What helps most: what you expected, what happened instead, and the workout file if one was involved. Files are plain text, so pasting one into an email is easy.
